BOGOR – Years after its creation by Korindo Foundation and the Bogor Regency Government, the Pakansari City Forest in Cibinong, Bogor Regency has now established itself as a community green space.
Its trees, planted under a greening initiative, have grown tall and lush, providing shade around the Pakansari Stadium.
Local woman Maya Hasanah said she’s pleased with how the place has changed. “Back then, this was a poorly maintained area, with overgrown trees that were an eyesore. And people would hang banners here and there, which made the place lose its appeal,” Maya explained. “Things look much neater after Korindo Foundation’s planting initiative. Kids can come here to play.”
The urban woodland came into being in November 2019 under the Green Collaboration program. It was built on a two-hectare site, consisting of 1,294 Eucalyptus deglupta (rainbow tree) trees. Over time, this number increased to more than 1,800.

Throughout the development, Korindo Foundation handled both the planting and maintenance, including removing invasive species and replacing trees that failed to thrive. Its goal was to ensure optimal growth for the remaining tree population — and deliver long-term benefits for everyone.
Following a three-year period of continuous planting and care, the Foundation transferred management of the forest to the Bogor Regency Government on February 3, 2023.
Now, local authorities are looking to expand its function as a place for recreation, education, and conservation. One of their plans is to introduce deer to the area, which will offer a recreational experience close to nature.
“We’re planning on introducing deer to this area. We want people to not only enjoy the greenery here, but also learn new things and have fun. Kids and families can especially learn about wildlife and connect more closely with nature,” said Agus, who’s responsible for the forest’s maintenance.
This project will have to consider site readiness — environmental suitability, maintenance, and animal management capabilities — to make a lasting impact.
Overall, Pakansari shows how greening programs bring gradually increasing value to neighborhoods. What started as seedlings in 2019 has become an entire ecosystem that enhances environmental quality and supports various activities, including quality time with loved ones. (PR)
